Titanium Without Retro Specifications
Moots combines traditional frame fabrication with standards normally associated with current carbon race bikes. Depending on the model, that includes flat-mount disc brakes, thru-axles, T47 threaded bottom brackets, UDH-compatible dropouts, internal routing, and integrated cockpits.
The Vamoots CRD is the dedicated road-racing option, with internal brake routing and clearance for tires up to 32mm. The Vamoots RCS and Vamoots 33 provide progressively more mixed-surface capability, with the 33 accepting tires up to a published 38mm.
The gravel line covers an equally wide range. Routt CRD prioritizes speed and an integrated front end, while Routt RSL and Routt 45 provide more tire clearance and a less narrowly focused riding position. Routt YBB adds a small amount of rear movement to reduce repeated impacts on rough gravel. It is better understood as a soft-tail than a conventional full-suspension design.
Mountain-bike choices begin with the 100mm-fork MXC cross-country frame. Womble uses a 140mm fork and clearance for tires up to 29 x 2.6 inches, placing it much closer to a modern trail hardtail. Mountaineer combines a 120mm fork with a larger version of the YBB system.
The Scrambler fills the space between gravel and mountain touring. It is designed around a drop bar but accepts 29 x 2.4-inch tires, cargo mounts, mechanical shifting, and internal dropper-post routing. That flexibility is valuable for backcountry builds, although its 38-tooth maximum chainring makes its low-geared intentions clear.
What to Know Before Buying
Decide on fit, cockpit position, drivetrain, routing, and intended tire size before ordering. Moots offers several customization choices, but availability varies by model. Custom geometry is most useful when based on a reliable fit assessment; it should not be treated as a substitute for determining the correct riding position.
The CRD models’ concealed hoses produce a clean front end but make headset work, travel disassembly, stem changes, and handlebar replacement more involved. Riders who adjust fit frequently or travel with their bike may prefer a model with less integrated routing.
YBB models also have a service consideration absent from rigid frames. Their slider, wiper, cup, spring, and elastomer are wear components, and replacement parts must be matched to the specific assembly. This system improves small-bump compliance but does not provide the travel, damping adjustment, or isolation of a conventional rear shock.
For used bikes, record the serial number and confirm the model year before ordering hangers, axles, forks, or electronic-shifting hardware. Moots has produced frames with quick-release wheels, several hub spacings, different brake formats, and multiple generations of routing. The company continues to list replacement parts for numerous older frames, but compatibility remains generation-specific.
Finish care also varies. A brushed titanium surface can be refreshed differently from an anodized, etched, or painted finish, so follow the instructions for the exact treatment rather than applying an abrasive pad indiscriminately.
Moots is best suited to riders prepared to invest heavily in a carefully selected titanium platform and keep it through multiple component cycles. Buyers who prioritize the lightest possible frame, maximum component value, or conventional full-suspension capability will generally find stronger alternatives elsewhere.
