Brompton

Brompton has built its identity around a specific kind of portability. Its three-part folding system brings the wheels together, lowers the seatpost and collapses the handlebar stem into a compact package that can be carried, rolled or stored indoors. That makes a Brompton particularly useful for trips combining cycling with trains, buses, offices, apartments or limited vehicle space.

Engineer Andrew Ritchie began developing the design in London in 1975, naming it after the Brompton Oratory near his apartment. The company was incorporated in 1976, and the essential folding arrangement has survived decades of component and manufacturing updates. Current frames are still produced and assembled through Brompton’s London operation, supported by a specialist welding division in Sheffield.

Brompton model range

Most current Bromptons retain the familiar 16-inch wheels and compact folded dimensions, but the lines differ significantly in weight, materials and gearing.

The A Line is the simplest entry point, using an all-steel frame, three-speed internal-gear hub and fixed equipment package. It works best for relatively short urban journeys where low cost and simplicity matter more than a wide gear range.

The C Line is the traditional all-steel Brompton and offers more choices in gearing, handlebar height, color and equipment. Current versions use either four or twelve gears. It remains the most representative choice for general commuting, errands and mixed public-transport trips.

The P Line reduces weight with a titanium rear frame, carbon fork and lighter components while retaining a steel main frame. The current conventional P Line uses a twelve-speed drivetrain. It is aimed at riders who expect to carry their bike regularly but do not need the substantially more expensive full-titanium construction of the T Line.

The T Line uses a titanium main frame and rear structure with carbon components. Four- and twelve-speed versions are offered. Its main practical advantage is lower carrying weight; the fold itself is broadly familiar rather than radically smaller.

The G Line is a separate, larger platform. Its 20-inch wheels, wider tires, hydraulic disc brakes, eight-speed internal hub and size-specific frames provide greater stability on broken pavement, gravel and longer rides. It still folds, but it is heavier and occupies more space than a 16-inch Brompton. Buyers should decide whether improved ride capability or minimum folded size matters more.

Electric C, P, T and G Line models use Brompton’s current e-Motiq system, combining a rear-hub motor, torque sensing and removable battery. Electric assistance helps on hills and longer journeys, but the motor and battery reduce the carrying advantage that attracts many riders to a folding bike. Published range figures should be treated as estimates because terrain, temperature, assistance level and rider weight all have substantial effects.

Ride, fit and ownership

A 16-inch Brompton feels quick and responsive, but tire pressure and wheel condition matter more than on a large-wheeled city bike. Small tires drop farther into potholes and transmit sharp impacts more readily. The G Line offers a calmer ride over poor surfaces, although it sacrifices some portability.

Classic Bromptons use a largely shared frame size, with handlebar and seatpost choices adjusting the riding position. The G Line instead comes in multiple frame sizes. A test ride remains worthwhile, especially for riders near the limits of the published fit range.

Bromptons also contain more model-specific parts than an ordinary hybrid. Tires, chains, brake pads and many routine items are straightforward, but the hinges, rear-frame pivot, seat sleeve, chain tensioner, folding controls and some drivetrain parts require Brompton-specific knowledge or tools. Compatibility also varies between pre-2022 bikes and the newer C, P, T and G platforms.

Registration extends the main-frame warranty, and Brompton recommends an initial service after approximately 100 miles followed by at least annual servicing. On a used bike, check both hinges for play, confirm that the seatpost remains secure, inspect the folding clamps and rear pivot, and identify the exact model generation before ordering parts.

Brompton makes the most sense when folding changes how the bicycle can be stored or transported. Riders who rarely carry or fold their bike may obtain more conventional components, larger wheels and lower cost from a standard city or touring bicycle.
