Canfield Bikes is a small mountain-bike specialist known for aluminum full-suspension frames, aggressive hardtails and highly configurable builds. Its range concentrates on trail, enduro, downhill and technical riding rather than cross-country racing, road cycling or electric bikes.
The company’s defining feature is its Canfield Balance Formula suspension platform, usually abbreviated to CBF. It also sells bikes using other suspension designs, along with Crampon flat pedals, short cranksets and model-specific service parts.
What Canfield Makes
Canfield’s current and recent range includes:
- Tilt: A versatile trail and all-mountain bike supporting 29-inch and mixed-wheel configurations. The third-generation frame can produce up to approximately 141mm of rear travel, depending on shock stroke, and is designed around forks from 130mm to 150mm.
- Lithium: A longer-travel enduro platform for 29-inch or mixed wheels. Its configurable shock stroke provides up to 165mm of rear travel, while the frame accepts forks from 160mm to 180mm.
- Balance: A 27.5-inch enduro bike with approximately 169mm of rear travel. Selected configurations can also be assembled with mixed wheels.
- Jedi: Canfield’s dedicated 29-inch downhill bike, with 203mm of front and rear travel.
- Nimble 9: A 4130 chromoly-steel hardtail designed around 29-inch wheels and 140–160mm forks. Sliding dropouts accommodate geared or singlespeed drivetrains.
- Yelli Screamy: An aluminum 29er hardtail with modern trail geometry, Boost rear spacing and internal dropper-post routing.
Limited-run titanium Nimble 9 frames and the ONE.2 gravity platform may also appear in Canfield’s catalog, although availability can be intermittent. Confirm that a listed frame is actually in production or in stock before planning a build around it.
Understanding CBF Suspension
CBF is a parallel-link, virtual-pivot suspension design. Its layout positions the suspension’s instant center near the bike’s chainline, with the intention of producing useful pedaling support while allowing the rear wheel to respond to impacts.
For the rider, the practical goal is a bike that can be pedaled without giving up the active suspension expected from a long-travel platform. Canfield also designs CBF around controlled braking behavior, although actual performance still depends on the frame, shock tune, spring rate, sag, damping settings, tires and terrain.
CBF does not eliminate the need for careful suspension setup. Start with Canfield’s recommended sag, confirm that the spring rate provides usable support throughout the travel and adjust rebound and compression methodically. A poorly matched spring or heavily closed damping circuit can obscure the characteristics the linkage is designed to provide.
Not every Canfield full-suspension bike uses CBF. The Jedi downhill bike uses Canfield’s Formula 1 multi-link system, which emphasizes a rearward axle path. Parts, setup instructions and assumptions should not be transferred between the two designs.
Tilt and Lithium V3 Adjustability
The third-generation Tilt and Lithium share a configurable rear-triangle architecture. Both support 29-inch and mixed-wheel setups, three chainstay-length positions and SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger.
Their dropout system is intended to preserve the principal frame geometry when the wheel configuration or rear-center position changes. It therefore offers more meaningful adjustment than a conventional flip chip that simultaneously alters several geometry measurements.
Rear travel is also adjustable through shock stroke:
- The Tilt uses a 210mm eye-to-eye shock, with supported strokes producing approximately 128mm, 135mm or 141mm of travel.
- The Lithium uses a 230mm eye-to-eye shock, with supported strokes producing approximately 152mm, 158mm or 165mm of travel.
Changing shock stroke is not the same as installing any shock that physically fits between the mounting points. The shock must have the specified eye-to-eye length, compatible hardware, appropriate clearance and a tune suitable for the frame. Any internal stroke change should be performed according to the shock manufacturer’s instructions.
Older Tilt and Lithium generations differ from these V3 frames. In particular, previous models may use Canfield-specific derailleur hangers rather than UDH and may require different axles, links, bearings or shock hardware.
Frames, Complete Bikes and Custom Builds
Canfield sells framesets, frame-and-suspension packages and selected complete bikes. Some complete builds are configured to order, allowing the buyer to choose components rather than accepting a single factory specification.
That flexibility is useful for experienced riders, but it makes compatibility planning important. Before ordering a frame or beginning a custom build, verify:
- Fork travel and maximum axle-to-crown length
- Shock size, stroke and mounting hardware
- Rear-hub spacing and axle specification
- Bottom-bracket standard
- Crank, chainring offset and chainline
- Headset and steerer requirements
- Seatpost diameter and insertion depth
- Brake-mount standard and required rotor adapter
- Tire and chainring clearance
Canfield’s current V3 full-suspension frames use a threaded 73mm bottom bracket and Boost 148mm rear spacing. Those specifications should not be assumed for every earlier frame.
A shipped bicycle may also require final assembly and adjustment. Buyers without the appropriate tools or experience should budget for professional assembly, including torque checks, brake alignment, drivetrain adjustment, tubeless setup and suspension setup.
Components and Replacement Parts
Canfield’s component range includes Crampon flat pedals, aluminum mountain-bike cranks, stems, saddles and small parts.
Crampon pedals are thin, serviceable platforms with replaceable traction pins. Multiple versions have been produced, so rebuild kits should be matched to the exact pedal model.
Canfield’s aluminum cranks are offered in unusually short lengths, including options down to 150mm. Short cranks can improve pedal clearance and may suit particular bike-fit requirements, but spindle, bottom-bracket and chainline compatibility must be checked before purchase.
The company also sells bearings, axles, hangers, linkage components, frame hardware and pedal rebuild parts. This is valuable for long-term ownership, but many parts are specific to a frame generation. Record the exact model, generation, size and serial number, and photograph unusual hardware before it is removed.
For suspension pivots, use the specified full-complement bearings where required. Standard radial bearings of the same external dimensions are not necessarily equivalent under the oscillating, high-load conditions found in a linkage.
Warranty and Used-Bike Considerations
Canfield’s published frame warranty is a two-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects for the original owner. It is non-transferable and requires proof of purchase. Labor, normal wear, improper assembly, neglected maintenance, unauthorized alterations and damage from using a fork beyond the recommended limit are among the stated exclusions.
Used-bike buyers should therefore assume that the original warranty will not transfer. Before purchasing an older Canfield, inspect the frame and pivots, identify the exact generation and confirm that essential replacement parts remain obtainable. Pay particular attention to derailleur hangers, rear axles, suspension links and proprietary hardware.
Who Is a Canfield Bike Best For?
Canfield is best suited to riders who want an aluminum mountain bike with aggressive geometry, adjustable configuration and the ability to choose their own components. The brand is especially relevant to riders who value suspension tuning, mixed-wheel options, short crank availability or singlespeed-capable hardtails.
It may be less suitable for someone who wants the broad local-dealer coverage, immediate test-ride availability or standardized build choices associated with a much larger manufacturer. Small-batch production can also mean that a particular size, color or frame package is not continuously available.
For the right owner, however, Canfield offers something increasingly unusual: mountain bikes designed around mechanical adjustability and rider-selected builds rather than a large catalog of nearly identical complete-bike specifications.
