SRAM is a component manufacturer whose name appears most often on drivetrains and hydraulic brakes for road, gravel, mountain, and electric mountain bikes. Its catalog stretches well beyond premium wireless equipment: SRAM also offers mechanical gravel and mountain-bike groups, replacement drivetrain parts, power meters, and components commonly specified on complete bikes.

The brand makes the most sense to riders who want components designed as a coordinated system. AXS electronic shifting, wide-range 1x gearing, and the hangerless Full Mount interface used by newer mountain and gravel derailleurs are central to the current range. These systems can produce a tidy, well-integrated build, but they also impose firm compatibility boundaries.

SRAM covers a broad range of prices. RED and XX SL emphasize low weight and premium materials, while Rival, Apex, GX, Eagle 90, and Eagle 70 bring related concepts to less expensive builds. Spending more generally reduces weight or adds electronic features; it does not automatically make the costliest group the best choice for everyday riding.

What SRAM Makes

SRAM’s current products cover most of a bicycle’s drivetrain and braking system. Suspension, wheels, and cycling computers are sold under separate brand names and are outside this overview.

  • Road components: RED AXS, Force AXS, and Rival AXS wireless groups, including controls, derailleurs, cranksets, cassettes, chains, power meters, and hydraulic disc brakes.
  • Gravel components: RED, Force, and Rival XPLR systems, plus the more accessible Apex range in wireless AXS and mechanical configurations.
  • Mountain-bike drivetrains: Electronic and mechanical Eagle Transmission groups, alongside conventional Eagle components still used on many existing bikes.
  • Hydraulic brakes: Maven for gravity-oriented applications, Motive for cross-country and trail bikes, DB-series brakes, and road hydraulic systems.
  • Drivetrain service parts: Chainrings, cassettes, chains, bottom brackets, cranksets, derailleur controls, batteries, and Universal Derailleur Hangers.
  • E-bike systems: Eagle Powertrain, which combines an e-MTB drive unit with compatible Transmission components and electronic controls.

Ecosystems, Not a Parts Bin

SRAM’s newer equipment is easiest to understand as a collection of related ecosystems. Eagle Transmission uses a Full Mount derailleur attached around the rear axle on a compatible UDH frame. It also uses T-Type cassettes, chains, and chainrings. Those parts should not be treated as interchangeable with a conventional hanger-mounted Eagle drivetrain simply because both carry the Eagle name.

The same caution applies on gravel bikes. Current 13-speed XPLR groups use a Full Mount derailleur and 10–46-tooth cassette, while older or less expensive XPLR configurations may be 12-speed and hanger-mounted. Road Flattop and mountain-bike T-Type chains may look related, but they serve different systems.

AXS removes shift cables and allows control customization, firmware updates, and battery monitoring. It also adds batteries, electronic troubleshooting, and model-specific pairing procedures. Mechanical Apex, Eagle 90, and Eagle 70 remain sensible alternatives for riders who prefer cable operation or do not need wireless controls.

What to Know Before Buying

Start with the exact component family and generation, not merely the SRAM logo or series name. Before ordering a derailleur, cassette, or chain, confirm the number of speeds, mounting system, frame interface, chain type, and required freehub. Depending on the cassette, a wheel may need an XD, XDR, or HG-compatible driver.

DUB identifies SRAM’s crank-spindle family, but it does not uniquely identify the correct bottom bracket. Frame shell standard, road or mountain crank type, standard or Wide spindle, chainline, and spacer arrangement all matter. This is an area where checking the installation chart saves considerable workshop frustration.

Brake-fluid requirements also vary. Current Maven, Motive, and DB8 brakes use SRAM-approved mineral oil, while SRAM road hydraulic brakes and numerous earlier mountain-bike models use DOT fluid. The two fluids must not be mixed; verify the exact brake model before choosing a bleed kit or opening a bottle.

SRAM will appeal most to riders who want coordinated wide-range gearing, wireless controls, or a modern Full Mount drivetrain and are prepared to follow its compatibility rules. Someone maintaining an older frame, prioritizing maximum cross-brand interchangeability, or wanting the simplest possible roadside repair may be happier with a conventional mechanical system.
